3 Ways To Tell If You Need AC Repair Before Summer

The days are getting hotter, but is your air conditioning system ready for the heat?

If the answer to that question was a cautious “I don’t know,” then you might want to call your local AC repair company for an inspection.

According to ENERGY STAR, the latest high-efficiency HVAC appliances will save you 20% on heating and cooling costs, but old, outdated AC units will do a lot worse than drive up your energy bill.

When the summer heat arrives in full force, those rusty appliances could cost you thousands in emergency repairs and lead to miserable, sweat-filled days come July.  But how do you know when it’s time to call your local AC repair company? Here is a short list of warning signs to watch out for in the days leading up to summer.

Leaking Water

If you notice that your air conditioning system is leaking water, you need to contact your local air conditioning repair company sooner rather than later. Not only is this a sign that the AC unit is malfunctioning, but it may also lead to damage to your home. AC systems naturally create moisture and condensation, but in a properly functioning system this moisture should be flushed out through drain lines. Leaking water is almost always a sign of trouble.

Strange Sounds

In the same way that you should listen for unusual noises coming from under the hood of your car, you should listen to your HVAC appliances, too. Chances are you recently started using your home air conditioning again, so listen closely for unusual noises. If you hear something, you should call your local AC repair company. Usually, these noises include things like hissing, squealing, or gurgling. This can be anything from a bad fan motor belt to a refrigerant leak somewhere in the system, both of which should be easily fixed by knowledgeable HVAC contractors.

Not Cool Enough

If you turn down the temperature on your thermostat but your home still isn’t cool enough, the solution isn’t to turn down the temperature even more. Usually, you will only succeed in burning out your appliances altogether. If your HVAC unit just isn’t cooling your home, make sure you look for simple fixes like blown fuses or clogged filters (yes, you really do need to replace those AC filters!). However, if you’re still sweating through the night, then the issue may be caused by a more serious problem. This could be anything from a bad thermostat to a faulty compressor, so it’s best to let a professional handle the issue and resolve it.
